Getting here from Coburg North
It is a straight trip east across the top of Coburg. The catch is that the trains do not help you, so most people drive it, ride it or take a bus.
- By car, east along Gaffney Street, which carries on as Murray Road on the Preston side, then past Preston Market and Preston Station to High Street. About 10 minutes outside peak.
- Bell Street is the other way across if you are at the southern end of the suburb. Bigger road, and slower than it looks in the morning.
- Bus routes 526 and 527 both connect Coburg and Preston.
- By bike, Gaffney Street is one of the few streets in Coburg North with marked lanes, and it is flat apart from the dip through the Merri Creek valley.
- Street parking in the surrounding streets, plus the off-street parking around Preston Market.
Worth being clear about the train. Coburg North is on the Upfield line, at Batman and Merlynston. We are about 500m from Preston Station on the Mernda line. Two different lines, both running south into the city, so the train means going in and back out again for a trip of 3km.
Coburg North is not short of work, it is short of workspace
Most of the suburb is houses, a lot of them the two bedroom brick places the Housing Commission put up in bulk, with newer estates behind them where the Kodak factory used to be.
There is real industry here too. The employment precinct bounded by Gaffney Street, Sydney Road, Shorts Road and Sussex Street is protected for industrial use, and the Sydney Road frontage through Coburg North is largely automotive trades: mechanics, transmission shops, panel and parts. That is warehouse and workshop space. What the suburb does not have is a floor of small offices where you can take one room.
Past that it is the little shopping strip at Merlynston and corner shops. Good for a coffee, not somewhere to work all day.
Why a base in Preston rather than home or the CBD
Working from a house in Coburg North has an obvious appeal and an obvious limit. The appeal is no commute. The limit is that the house keeps being a house. Someone else is home, the dog goes off mid call, and there is nowhere to leave a second monitor set up.
The city is the other option, and from Coburg North that is the Upfield line or the Route 19 down Sydney Road, about 9km each way, twice a day. City coworking then charges city rates to put you in a shared room with strangers. Going 3km east instead gets you your own room, and you are home in about ten minutes.

At the last census the biggest employer of Coburg North residents was health care and social assistance at around 13 per cent, with professional, scientific and technical services close behind at around 12 per cent. Council's economic work also picks Coburg North out as one of Merri-bek's stronger pockets for design and creative jobs.
On the ground that means allied health, consultants, bookkeepers, designers, developers, and people running the office half of a trade while the tools stay in the shed. Almost none of that needs a shopfront. It needs a quiet room, a proper street address for the ABN and the website, and somewhere to sit down with a client that is not a kitchen table.
What is around us at the Preston end
You drive in past most of it. Preston Market is on Murray Road near the station, so the trip home can pick up the fruit and veg, and Preston City Oval is in the same pocket. Northland is further east again for the big shops.
High Street Preston is a working strip rather than a dining strip: everyday shops, banks, and a long run of family run food businesses. If your work touches council, Darebin's offices are on Gower Street. It is also easier to park in than Sydney Road, which matters when someone is driving over to meet you.
