Getting here from Heidelberg West
Which way you come across depends on whether you start on Bell Street or up in the business park.
- Bell Street west is the obvious run. It takes you through Bellfield and Preston and puts you on High Street about a kilometre south of us. Turn north. Around 10 minutes outside peak, longer between 8 and 9 when the lights back up.
- From the northern end, Southern Road joins Murray Road over the Darebin Creek bridge. Murray Road runs past Northland and comes out at High Street beside Preston station. We are a few hundred metres north of that corner.
- The 903 SmartBus does the same trip without you driving it. It picks up on Bell Street near The Mall, runs through Northland and stops at Preston station on Murray Road, roughly every 15 minutes through the middle of the day. Then about a 500m walk.
- Street parking in the side streets off High Street. Read the signs, some of it is time limited.
The Route 86 tram on Plenty Road is about a 1km walk from us, so coming from the east it is not worth planning around.
Why not take space in the business park?
Because what comes up around Sheehan Road and Dougharty Road is a factory unit, or a warehouse with an office stuck on a mezzanine. Right if you need a roller door. Wrong if you need a desk, a door that shuts and somewhere to sit a customer down.
Between a warehouse lease and the kitchen table there is not much around Heidelberg West. This is the in between option: one room, month to month, no lock-in, no bond, one month's notice.
Who we hear from around Heidelberg West
A trade and manufacturing suburb
Heidelberg West is two suburbs in one. The northern half is the Heidelberg West Business Park, bounded by Sheehan Road, Dougharty Road, Bamfield Road and Orr Street. The work in there is printing, furniture making, fabricated metal, machinery and equipment and food production, plus electrical contractors, automotive repair, wholesalers and cleaning businesses.
The southern half is residential. It was built as the 1956 Olympic Village, became a Housing Commission estate, and has been moving into private hands since. The Mall on Bell Street has been its centre since 1956.
So the people who write to us from Heidelberg West are rarely after a startup desk. They are already running something out of a shed, a yard or a ute, and the paperwork has outgrown wherever it lives now.
The workshop is not the place to do the office part
A workshop is loud and dusty and full of people asking you things. It is not where you price a job, chase an invoice or take a call about money. The house is quieter, until school holidays.
A private office here is $500 to $650 a month plus GST for your own lockable room. 24/7 access seven days on your own pincode, fingerprint if you prefer it, fibre at 2000/200. Your files, your second screen and your samples stay where you left them.
If you only need the address off the workshop, the virtual office is $50 a month plus GST: a business address, mail held here with an email when it arrives, and use of the meeting space. Business Address+ at $250 adds a desk here one day a month.
What is around you at the Preston end
You leave a suburb where lunch is whatever The Mall has open and land in the middle of the High Street strip. Preston Market is a few hundred metres away, off Murray Road and Cramer Street.
- Preston station about 500m away, so staff or clients can reach you on the Mernda line
- Preston Market, banks, post office and chemists within a short walk
- Northland sits on your way in, so a supplier run or a bank errand fits into the trip
Four kilometres west instead of the whole run into town
Plenty of people around Heidelberg West still make the trip into the CBD and pay city rates for a desk at the end of it. Preston is 4km the other way and the rent is nothing like it.
It also keeps you in range. A job in Bundoora, a delivery landing at the yard, a site meeting back in Heidelberg. From here that is a short detour. From Collins Street it is the rest of the day.
Explore by type
A permanent desk around here costs $360 to $550/mo + GST for a desk in a shared room. A private office here starts at $500/mo + GST for your own room with a door that locks.
